Alaula’s Ongoing Commitment to Affordable Housing for Maui Nui

There’s no doubt that the island of Maui (and our surrounding neighbors in the county) are a beautiful and vibrant place, attracting the hearts and minds of all who are able to experience it. However, for those who call the Valley Isle and Maui Nui their home, finding affordable housing can be an extremely daunting challenge in several respects—not the least of which concerns the question of affordability.

According to the most-recent data released from the REALTORS® Association of Maui, the median sales price for a single-family home on Maui last month was a whopping $1.1 million, while the median sales price for a condominium soared to $877,000. These prices are simply out of reach for most island residents (and most working families no matter their location across the country), placing their dreams of home-ownership and an affordable, sustainable future on the island far out of reach.

The high cost of living on the island, coupled with limited housing options and an affordability crisis—much less our worldwide economic situation and environmental issues—has created a situation where many families are struggling to simply make ends meet, much less afford to obtain permanent and sustainable housing.
